I thought I had just a crack damaged coin, a closer look revealed the word "LIBERTY" struck backwards on the obverse side of coin. Don't know how this could have happened. is this unusual?

More Likely two coins got manually smashed together after the mint than an actual mint error. This is important: are the letters recessed into the coin or raised above it?
