i'm afraid to tell you, this was not a mint error. Yes, there was a crack in the mold There's only one problem. Real coins are struck with a die, not cast in a mold. Yours indeed was cast in a mold, it's a low-grade counterfeit. The features are very mushy, typical of a copy. Now, it may have gold in it, so it may still have some value; I could determine that by testing. Do you want to sell any of this? Your family deserves good service!
This is a 1849 gold one dollar coin it has a mint error the mold was cracked. If you enlarge it goes all the way across the reverse side. This coin has been in my family 40 years. Purchased at estate (With other Gold coins) auction It was keep in a bank (banks) safe deposit boxes for over 50 years. So knowing the last 90 plus years history it looks at the very least AU. I just recently look at it under a jeweler loop now know why it was keep and handled with care. Thank Tim
