No. Because he enjoyed it. There are however movements in coin markets and there was a craze for high-grade rolls and individual specimens back then. So at the time it made sense. But I'm not sure why you're calling it rare.

1954 Unknown Penny
Thanks for the free appraisals. No need to reply if this is only worth a penny. My Uncle was a rare coin collector and he has 4 pennies in his collection which.... for reasons unknown to me... he paid over a dollar for around 1960. This is one of them. Did he pay almost $2 for this penny, a few years after it was minted, in vain?
